Nanoramic ® Laboratories and E-Lyte Innovations announced the establishment of a strategic partnership for battery research and development.

Nanoramic Laboratories "Nanoramic" and E-Lyte Innovations GmbH "E-Lyte" have established a strategic research and development partnership with Nanoramic's Neocarbon ® Develop breakthrough battery technology based on core electrode technology and E-Lyte's high-performance electrolyte.

One of the focuses of this partnership is to develop an advanced alternative to electric vehicle batteries without PFAS and prepare for commercialization

Nanoramic has provided a solution to potential limitations that the battery industry is about to face through its Neocarbonix electrode technology that does not contain PFAS. Neocarbonix is the only chemical independent direct solution on the market that eliminates PFAS in the cathode and anode, while reducing battery costs, increasing energy density, and shortening charging time.

E-Lyte is developing a custom electrolyte to optimize the performance of Neocarbonix in innovative battery systems. The two companies are working together to provide alternative high-performance solutions for electric vehicle batteries to address potential supply chain issues caused by the PFAS ban.

Eric Kish, CEO of Nanoramic, stated:

This cooperation marks our unwavering commitment to promoting the large-scale adoption of electric vehicles by addressing key industry challenges.

As the proposed PFAS restrictions approach, we recognize that continuing to develop battery technology without PFAS is crucial for achieving accelerated growth in the electric vehicle industry.

Dr. Ralf Wagner, CEO of E-Lyte, stated:

E-Lyte's vision is to achieve electrification in all areas of life in a sustainable manner.

However, batteries are sustainable only if their final application, manufacturing process, and necessary components are sustainable. With Nanoramic, we elevate the incredible high energy density of new cytochemistry and cellular levels to commercial levels

The two companies are also expanding their innovative production processes. Neocarbonix is able to manufacture electrodes without PFAS using existing wet electrode coating processes. Wet coating advantageously forms a porous electrode structure with a large surface area, which is crucial for improving battery performance. Wet coating also avoids the use of fine dry powder, as fine dry powder may bring safety risks such as dust explosion.

E-Lyte recently announced the expansion of a highly innovative 8000 ton/year production plant, with plans to start operating in Germany as early as early as 2024. In addition, the company also plans to expand into the North American market at the same time, also in early 2024.

PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances) is a group of chemicals used in various industries, including the battery industry. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a widely used PFAS as a traditional electrode adhesive. Recently, PFAS has attracted the attention of institutions such as the European Chemical Administration (ECHA) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

ECHA has proposed limitations that may affect lithium-ion and dry electrode processes, and the two institutions will continue to evaluate various PFAS to further limit them. In response to such policies, battery manufacturers are seeking PFAS alternatives to prepare for supply chain transformation.
